The Home Office reports sponsored study visa applications on a rolling 12-month basis. The year ending August 2026 shows 360,700 applications — down 16% versus the year ending August 2025. Within 2026, the monthly trend is improving — April and May were down 40% versus 2025, August recovered to -17.3%. The direction of travel is positive even as the overall annual figure remains significantly down. September 2026 data — covering the start of the academic year — will be published October 2026 and will confirm whether the recovery has held into the new intake. Next update: October 2026. The UK government confirmed it remains committed to introducing an International Student Levy despite sector opposition. Implementation is planned for 1 August 2028 following two trial cycles in 2026/27 and 2027/28. BriefingGraduate Route Cut to 18 Months from January 2027

The Home Office confirmed in legislation that the Graduate Route post-study work visa will be reduced from two years to 18 months for bachelor's and master's graduates applying from 1 January 2027. PhD graduates retain three years. Students applying before 31 December 2026 still receive the current two-year permission.
